Hope Totes

Parker & Marsha Merrifield

“In January 2013 my son Parker, an 18-year-old High School Senior and Cadet Captain in the Civil Air Patrol (with a Congressional nomination to the Air Force Academy), was diagnosed with a rare form of childhood cancer. While his peers were looking forward to summer vacation and planning for college, Parker’s dreams of becoming a pilot were replaced with fears of upcoming surgeries and months of chemotherapy. Thankfully, with the help of amazing doctors at the J Michael Carroll Cancer Center and UCLA Medical Center, Parker is in remission, feeling better and an honor student at the University of Alaska Fairbanks.

One of my cherished possessions during our years of treatment was my tote bag. It contained everything I needed to keep Parker comfortable and myself organized. In 2014 I came to the Fairbanks Hospital Foundation with an idea – a program to provide tote bags to cancer patients receiving treatment. Today, I am very proud that my simple idea has turned into Hope Totes.”

— Marsha, Parker’s Mom

Marsha’s seed of an idea turned into “Hope Totes”, a comfort care bag that is provided to all newly diagnosed cancer patients. Each Tote contains approximately $50 in essentials (lotion, chapstick, North Pole coffee card, Cancer 101 organizer, pen, paper, etc.), funded by generous local business sponsors and through individual contributions to the Circle of Hope campaign.

On September 16th, 2015, the Circle of Hope team will be hosting the first annual Hope Totes Fund-A-Thon with a goal to raise $20,000 – the cost of a year’s worth of totes for the over 300 new cancer patients in Fairbanks each year. The Fund-A-Thon will begin at 7:00 am and last through 7:00 pm on MAGIC 101.1 and 102.5 KIAK-FM and conclude with a 30 minute segment on CBS News 13 from 7:30 – 8:00pm. Hope Totes donors will be registered to win a “once-in-a-lifetime” trip to the 2016 Grammy Awards, including airfare, hotel and special ground package.
